Accoquinés depuis l'ère Myspace il y a plus de 15 ans, le Californien Jay Echeverria (Red Space Cadet) et le Parisien Cyrille Poumerie (Cyrod) ont appris ensemble à bricoler leurs télescopages noisy aux accents psyché par échange de fichiers, pour finalement sortir leur premier opus enregistré à distance en 2009. Une quinzaine d'albums et d'EPs s'en sont suivis depuis et autant de mentions dans les pages d'IRM où l'on suit avec assiduité, depuis la sortie de "Jimmy Eliot’s Exports" en 2010 (www.indierockmag.com/article11842.html), ces aventures aussi truculentes que digressives marquées autant par le noise rock ricain mélangeur et décontracté des 90s que par le post-punk anglais ou le krautrock. Pour donner une idée, on les a comparés au fil des ans et des mutations du projet à Syd Barrett, à Pavement, à Beck ou encore aux Boo Radleys... du moins jusqu'à la parenthèse récente du bien-nommé "Folks & Falls" de 2018 (www.indierockmag.com/article29876.html), plus folk et apaisé quoique tout aussi libertaire et volontiers dissonant dans ses arrangements, boisés cette fois. Ainsi, bien malin qui pourrait prévoir la direction du prochain opus de notre duo transatlantique, pas même les intéressés tant leurs compositions ont le don de leur échapper, quelque part entre la folie mal contenue de l'Américain et la rigueur finalement tout aussi baroque et déglinguée du Français. De quoi garder intacte notre passion pour le projet à l'heure de ce 12e long format aux atmosphères plus embrumées que jamais, par moments proches du shoegaze (cf. "Tone Sweet Tone", ou l'introductif "Pieces of Mind" enveloppé par l'écho de ses riffs abrasifs), retour à l'évidence et à la simplicité des débuts, le science des textures et le côté groggy de l'époque en sus. Il y a toujours des choses assez fébriles sur "Le Ciel Rouge", en tête le lynchien "The Circle Dance", le chant angoissé du gothique "Unquiet Gravel" ou ce morceau-titre aux roulements de batterie et cascades d'arpèges très jazz improv sur fond de nappes hantées, mais on y croise aussi la langueur et l'évidence d'un Lou Barlow (sur le saturé mais chaleureux "All Over Again" ou la pop song "Grey Sky"), la candeur électrique de Dinosaur Jr ("The Candle", virant rapidement toutefois au psychédélisme 70s et aux solos alambiqués) et bien sûr le genre de digressions étranges dont les deux musiciens ont le secret, de l'instru synthétique "Red Space Robot" aux choeurs ambient du final "Itch the Scratch" en passant par les samples orchestraux et l'acoustique arabisante du superbe "Something in the Air" au groove presque hip-hop... encore un petit bijou d'objet musical non identifié, en somme, pour l'un des groupes les plus inventifs et singuliers de l'indie rock français !

Jay Echeverria (Red Space Cadet) from L.A., California and Cyrille Poumerie (Cyrod) from Paris teamed up more than 15 years ago, during the Myspace era, and learned together to fiddle their noisy blends of indie rock, post-punk, krautrock and weird psychedelia by exchanging files, finally releasing their first LP back in 2009. About fifteen albums and EPs have followed since then, and as many mentions in IRM's columns, from where we've been following closely their musical endeavors since "Jimmy Eliot's Exports" in 2010. Over the years and the several mutations of the project, we compared them to Syd Barrett, Pavement, Beck, The Boo Radleys... at least until the recent "Folks & Falls" (2018), more acoustic and peaceful although just as free-spirited and dissonant through its woodwind arrangements. It's safe to say that nobody could foresee the direction of any next record from the transatlantic duo, not even the musicians themselves since the compositions of Red Space Cyrod always seem to manage to escape their creators. Plenty enough to keep intact our love for the project at the time of the release of this 12th album, whose atmospheres appear to be hazier than ever, at times close to shoegaze (see for example "Tone Sweet Tone", or the introductory track "Pieces of Mind" surrounded by the constant echo of its abrasive guitar riffs), return of sorts to the simplicity of their beginnings, but with a brand new science of textures and the groggy feel of the times we live in. There are still some feverish elements in "Le Ciel Rouge", especially with the lynchian "The Circle Dance", the edgy vocals of the gothic-sounding "Unquiet Gravel" or that haunted title track filled with improv-like drum rolls and cascades of arpeggios, but you can also hear something of the languid self-evidence of Lou Barlow (cf. the warmly saturated "All Over Again" and the pop song "Grey Sky"), of the electric candor of Dinosaur Jr ("The Candle", however quickly turning to 70s psychedelia and convoluted guitar solos) and of course plenty of those strange digressions that the two musicians like to disseminate in their records, from the electronic instrumental "Red Space Robot" to the ambient choirs of the last track "Itch the Scratch", through the orchestral samples, oriental melody and hip-hop groove of "Something in the Air" : in other words, yet another unidentified musical gem for one of the most inventive and unique French indie rock bands around !
